NIC hosting 'This Place Where You Walk' history events

North Idaho College is hosting a presentation, history walking tour and display in the Molstead Library in October. The presentation and walking tour will be led by local historian and author Robert Singletary.
Dressed in a Fort Sherman-era uniform, Singletary will lead “A Campus Walk through History” beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in front of NIC’s Molstead Library. The tour will explore the rich history of the area since the Coeur d’Alene Tribe had its main village on the site, through the Fort Sherman days and into the early days of the college. Students can take the tour for free with a student ID card; the cost is $15 per person for the public.
The public is invited to a free presentation on “This Place Where You Walk and its History: The Coeur d’Alene Tribe; Fort Sherman; and Early Days of North Idaho College/Coeur d’Alene” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Edminster Student Union Building, Lake Coeur d’Alene Room. Singletary’s lecture will include historic photographs of where NIC now stands. Three of the original Fort Sherman buildings are still in use.
From Oct. 9-29, NIC’s Molstead Library will feature the display “This Place Where You Walk.” The display will include a replica of the Ft. Sherman gate, along with historic photographs and other artifacts from the fort, Coeur d’Alene Tribe, and early North Idaho College.
Also on display will be the Nez Perce Tribe’s traveling educational “trunk” with traditional items made by the Nez Perce people. As always, Molstead Library is open to the public.
