I continue to be amazed by our state representative in District 1, Heather Scott. In 2014, she came out of her career as a biologist to run for office with a message that wasn’t the usual pablum we heard from our longtime state legislators.

No, she went right to the root of the problem that frustrated her and many citizens — the disconnect with our representatives who showed up around election time and told us that they were the power in Boise and we needed to reelect them to maintain their power. Heather challenged that upside-down notion by reminding us that it’s we who hold the power, not politicians. We delegate it to them, and we can take it away.

It has been inspiring to hear her give example upon example of how our freedoms and individual rights are gradually threatened by complacency and the thorough “sales job” done by the Boise establishment to flout conservative principles. Honoring the Constitution is paramount in her message, and more than once, she has put the spotlight on our Legislature’s troubling willingness to allow the federal government and even the United Nations to insert their statutes into Idaho’s state laws.

This takes guts. But she is that rarest of politicians who tackles the status quo, and she does it fearlessly. Whether you are on the right or the left, rich or poor, rural or urban, on Nov. 6, please remember who speaks for you and reelect Heather to be our voice in Boise.
