LEWISTON — Seniors Cameron Parkes broke the Priest River cross country record with a time of 16:22.1, good enough to finish 8th overall and help Priest River to a 7th place finish last Saturday at the 3A Idaho State Cross Country Championships at Lewiston Orchards.

Senior Caleb Gleason finished 14th in 16:58 to also earn state medalist honors in a pair of stellar individual races. Travis Matthews was 51st in 18:15.3, Kaden Fulton 60th in 18:27.9, Jordan Phillips 65th in 18:34.2, Graden Hanes 74th in 19:27.8 and Conor Berns 75th in 19:44.7 to round out the Spartan boys in action.

“Cameron got 8th place with a school record time, and Caleb got 14th place getting into the 16s for the first time in the 5K,” said Spartan coach Lance Clark, whose younger runners also got state experience. “The good news from these guys is that they are really young and got some experience this year and got to be on a team that finished 7th place at state.”

Annika Rantala was the lone Spartan girl to earn medalist honors, finishing 18th in 20:25 to lead a team of all underclassmen to a respectable 5th place finish, which bodes well for the future.

Erika Swoboda was 27th in 21:27.1, Sharnai Hogan was 37th in 22:05.1, Izzie Schmidt was 39th in 22:07.3, Amber Johnston 44th in 22:29.5, Ainslee Nordby 56th in 23:21.8 and Kymara Fulton 69th in 27:18.4 for the Spartans.

“The girls did extremely well this year. They got in the top five teams for the first time in school history. They were only 16 points from getting a trophy,” said Clark. “The girls are all returning next year, and have a number of really talented girls looking at joining the team from the junior high next year. Good Job to our assistant coach Steffie Pavey for helping these girls believe in themselves.”

The Team Awards night is on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.

n Brown, Bell earn All-IML soccer honors

Priest River juniors Keona Brown and Cameron Bell each earned a spot on the All-Intermountain League soccer teams, as voted on recently by the league’s coaches.

“Cameron was a consistent leader for the team. His example was above and beyond in team commitment, community service, and school spirit,” said Spartan boys coach Rob Lawler. “Cameron led us in goals with 11. He earned the honor of being selected all league.”

Brown was active in the midfield and created a lot of offense for the Spartan girls.
