Penalty kick helps Timberwolves hand Bulldogs first loss of season

COEUR d’ALENE — Jordie Breeden scored her second goal in as many games to stake Sandpoint to a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but Lake City rallied for two late goals to post a 2-1 win in nonleague girls soccer on Friday at Lake City High School.

The Bulldogs (2-1) broke a scoreless game with a counter attack in the 42nd minute, when Riley Walkington played a nice through ball to Breeden, who took a couple of touches before burying the ball in the back of the net.

The Timberwolves (3-0) got an equalizer from Lily Tweedy in the 60th minute, before a questionable call went against the Bulldogs in the 74th minute, resulting in the deciding PK from Chloe Teets.

“They had a quality ball into the box, it was bumbling around, and the girl went down on a tackle from Yeo,” described Bulldogs head coach Conor Baranski, who didn’t agree with the call. “I thought it was pretty soft.”

The nonleague tilts between the programs, each among the best in the state in their respective classification, have served both schools well over the years. Baranski looks forward to the salty competition, and felt his team learned a lot in defeat.

“Lake City is one of the best programs in the state. Well coached and well organized, and it is always a battle,” described Baranski. “We fought, and got a lot of quality looks. I’m disappointed to lose, but that was a good learning game for us, to show the younger players the level we need to be at to be successful at state.”

Sandpoint travels to Lakeland for a 4A Inland Empire League opener on Tuesday.
