Bulldogs blister GSL Titans

| September 7, 2018 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Riley Walkington continues to blast balls into the back of the net, and Jordie Breeden joined her en route to four first half goals, as the Bulldogs notched one of their best nonleague wins in recent memory, jolting 4A Greater Spokane League foe University 4-0 in nonleague girls soccer Thursday at Pine St. Field.

Walkington notched her third hat trick of the season for the Bulldogs (4-1), and now has 10 goals and five assists in the first five games of the season. Breeden scored the first goal of the game and added an assist, and the Bulldogs took control of the action from the first whistle.

Sandpoint head coach Conor Baranski was pleased with the play of his team, which looked sharp and crisp in notching a rare win against a GSL school.

“The score doesn’t suggest how hard fought that game was. Our players are exhausted,” said Baranski, admitting he was ecstatic about the result. “We play these games to get the hardest competition. I loved the mentality to go out and beat a GSL school 4-0.”

The back four of Jezza Hutto, Mya Darling, Yeo Yarnell and Emma Thielbahr were tough as nails, shutting down the Titans’ attack and earning the respect of Baranksi.

“They had to work really hard, they put in a shift,” he said. “We were really efficient in the attack. I’ve said it before, but Riley is absolutely special.”

The Titans (1-1) were on their heels from the start, with Walkington finishing a nice pass from Piper Frank for a 4-0 lead heading into the half.

University came out with more fire in the second half, and tested goalie Shea Kilpatrick, who split the shutout in goal with Hattie Larson. The Titans head coach had nothing but respect for Sandpoint, a 4A state contender that clearly snuck up on her team.

“They had a lot of pace up front, a lot of crafty players up top,” said Titans coach Kara Sharpe of Sandpoint. “They did a nice job of penetrating our backs, good athletes, well coached.”

Sandpoint is at Lewiston on Saturday.
