Garcia runs wild to help Wampus Cats top Knights

CLARK FORK — Sophomore quarterback Cameron Garcia had a breakout game, leading the Wampus Cats to another decisive North Star League win, downing Lakeside 42-8 on Friday night in Clark Fork.

Garcia finished with 263 yards rushing and 31 yards passing, and even forced a fumble on defense, leading the Cats (2-1, 2-0 NSL) with touchdown runs of 72, 45 and 35 yards, using his speed to do damage in space. He also threw a pair of touchdowns to senior running back Theo Icardo, and he’s starting to get comfortable under center.

“Offensively, Cameron had a huge game, he crushed it today. He’s such a dual threat, such good speed and moves in the open field, he just runs away from defenders,” praised Cats head coach Brian Arthun. “As a sophomore, he’s really coming into his own as a leader.”

Chase Sutton had an interception, and Dakota West, Josh Constantin, Charlie Abbott and Mathis Heisel each recorded a sack in another strong defensive effort from the Cats.

“Defensively, we continue to play well. The one touchdown they did get was because of a turnover inside the 10,” said Arthun, who likes their aggressive style. “Guys are rallying to the ball, arriving with an attitude, some big hitting going on. We preach creating turnovers at Clark Fork.”

Running back Devin Arroyo plunged in from three yards out for the Knights (0-3, 0-2 NSL), who had trouble moving the ball against the Cats.

Next week is a huge showdown, with Mullan coming to town for the final league game, with playoff implications at stake.

“That’s going to be a big one,” said Arthun. “Mullan only lost to Deary by 20, they’re playing well. It could decide who wins the North Star League.”
