Sept. 9, 1968 — HONOR CANDY STRIPERS

Six Candy Stripers who have completed their period as summer volunteers at Bonner General Hospital were honored by the hospital’s auxiliary at a tea Aug. 28. Honored were Paula Lukinich, Ellen Balch, Nancy Hunt, Janet Brown, Nancy Woods and Jo Ann Saunders. Their coordinator at the hospital is Miss Veldonna Osborn.

BEAR WRECKED TWO VEHICLES

A shortage of berries has forced the wild bears into more civilized areas.

Early Friday, Claude Morton hit a large black bear near the Linscott gravel pit, wrecking his vehicle. A passing trucker put three pistol shots into the injured 300-lb. animal. It was carted off to the side of U.S. 95 and left for Idaho Fish and Game to pick up. Some hours afterward, the bear came to long enough to get into the roadway again and got himself another vehicle. Name of the driver is not known. This time the animal seemed dead for sure, and Les Gissel drew the job of disposal of the carcass.

SUSAN STILWELL TO ATTEND EWSC

Susan Stilwell, a 1968 SHS graduate, will attend Eastern Washington State College this fall. Miss Stilwell and her sister, Mrs. Jeff Harris, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Stilwell, attended the summer quarter at EWSC.

Sept. 9, 1918 — NEWS FROM ODEN

Matt Schmidt is the first in this locality to get a threshing machine to thresh his fine crop of grain this season.

James Dunn, with a first class sawing machine sawed a huge pile of winter wood for H.S. Crowder this week.

Cattle buyers are beginning to come to this vicinity to buy beef cattle. The prices they offer are far below the cost of feeding them, and they seem to think they would be doing the farmer a great favor if they took them out of his way. Few will be sold at the prices offered.

FLAGPOLES FOR SCHOOL BUILDINGS

The Sandpoint school district has ordered flagpoles to be set in the yards of the four city school buildings. The purchase of the poles was made from the match factory and they are now being dressed and will be erected shortly. The government has suggested that a flagpole be put up in every schoolyard of the country.

CITY BREVITIES

A.C. Christenson left Sunday for Camp Taylor, Louisville, Ky., where he was ordered to report to enter officers’ training camp.

Harry Parsons of Kootenai has gone to Seattle to enlist in the navy.
