Four Bulldogs post big wins at Icebreaker

COEUR d’ALENE — Jacob Ballard started the season in strong fashion, winning the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, while also finishing second on two relays, as the Bulldog swim team kicked off the 2018 season on Saturday in the Icebreaker Meet at the Kroc Center.
Garrett Bamer won the 100 back and was second in the 100 free, and Hayden Norling was third in the 200 free and 500 free to lead the boys to a fourth place finish among the eight teams, which included all four 5A IEL teams.
Mikayla Schoening won the 50 free and was fourth in the 200 free, and Kate Bokowy won the 100 free and was third in the 200 IM in a strong show of speed for the Bulldog girls, who finished in third place as a team.
Schoening and Bokowy teamed with Autumn Morgan and Sierra Speakman to finish second in the 200 medley relay, while Kaya Wright, Morgan, Schoening and Bokowy combined to finish second in the 200 free relay.
Other top 10 finishes by the girls team included Morgan (3rd 100 breast, 4th 200 IM), Speakman (3rd 100 fly, 5th 500 free), Bri Brosnahan (6th 100 breast), Charlie LeBlanc (7th 100 fly, 10th 50 free), Sabrina Wilson (7th 500 free, 10th 100 breast) and Chandler Sanborn (10th 100 fly).
Ballard, Bamer, Norling and Jack Grzincic combined to finish second in both the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay to earn valuable points against some strong competition.
Other top 10 finished by the boys team included Grzincic (4th 100 fly, 6th 50 free), Hayden Leavitt (7th 500 free) and Izaak Bartlett (9th 200 free).
First year Bulldog head coach Greg Jackson liked what he saw from his charges in the first competition of the season.
“Great performance and personal best from team co-Captain Brianna Brosnahan in 100 Breaststroke, and continued improvement from Autumn Morgan as she recovers from her ankle injury last year,” said Jackson. “Freshmen Jack Grzincic and Hayden Leavitt both had great performances and proved they will be strong support in our dual meets, as well as contenders for state qualification.”
Sandpoint hits the pool again on Saturday at the University of Idaho.
