Huge home game on tap tonight for Wampus Cats

CLARK FORK — It may only be mid-September, but for all intents and purposes the playoffs start tonight for the Wampus Cats, who host the Tigers in a North Star League clash that could earn them a playoff berth with a win.
Clark Fork (2-1, 2-0 NSL) is off to a sizzling start in league play, hammering Kootenai and Lakeside to the tune of 84-14 in the past two games. A scheduling quirk has the Cats playing their third and final NSL game in just the fourth week in the season, and offers a chance to sweep league play and earn the league’s lone state playoff berth, rendering the yet-to-be-played league games essentially for pride. But that would take a win.
Sophomore quarterback Cameron Garcia is coming off a five touchdown game, Theo Icardo is making a huge impact on both sides of the ball, Dakota West is carrying the rushing load and Josh Constantin has been making plays on the edges for the Cats, who have some of the best speed they’ve had in years.
The game stacks up pretty evenly on paper, with the new co-op team of Mullan/St. Regis (1-1, 0-0 NSL) having blown out Timberline 66-6 and lost to Deary 40-18 to start the season. The Tigers still have Kootenai and Lakeside left on the schedule, so a win for them doesn’t guarantee anything.
