n Spartan cross country team competes at Viking Invitational

HAYDEN — Cameron Parkes clocked an 18:11 to finish 11th overall, leading the Spartans boys cross country team to an 8th place finish among 14 teams in their division at the 5K Viking Invitational Saturday at Hayden Canyon.

Jordan Phillips finished 39th (19:33), followed by Conor Berns in 55th (20:13), Travis Matthews in 56th (20:16) and Graden Hanes in 73rd (21:26) in the field of 96 runners.

Spartan freshmen Brian Lord finished 57th in the JV race in a solid time of 20:39, while Kaden Fulton was 59th in 20:41 as the two are creeping up on varsity times with PRs.

“Some standouts for the boys were JV runners Kayden Fulton and Brian Lord. They both ran personal bests,” said head coach Lance Clark of his boys team. “I also want to recognize Jordan Phillips for showing improvements on the course versus last year.”

Izzie Schmidt was 26th in 22:53 to lead the Spartan girls, followed closely by Annika Rantala in 32nd (23:25), Erika Swoboda in 37th (23:58), Sharnai Hogan in 40th (24:16) and Kymara Fulton in 50th (25:11) in a strong pack showing for the young team, which finished 7th among 10 teams in their division race.

The team was missing a couple of key runners with sickness and injury, but posted a good showing nonetheless as they continue to trend in the right direction time-wise.

“We had a great week of practice this last week. We also had a really good race from both girls and boys squads. I see a lot of improvements in this race. The biggest improvements came from our girls team and freshmen boys,” said Clark. “The girls standouts this week were Izze, Annika, and freshman Erika Swoboda. I would like to include Ainslee Nordby, Sharnai Hogan, and Kymara Fulton for having great races at the Hayden Course. I can’t wait to see how they all do at the Ivan Benson Home Invitational this upcoming Thursday.”
