SANDPOINT — Sailors, I couldn’t help thinking about what Sandpoint Sailing Association has done for the Sandpoint community this summer.

Being a linear thinking, numbers sort of guy, I started with a spread sheet and came up with the following information about SSA’s summer of 2018 in Sandpoint:

The SSA-owned Capri 18 went out at least 45 times, often with additional passengers so at least 70 folks rode in this boat over the summer.

The Holders got out less this year than last year, 31 times for general use, but the Holders played a key role in our growing Parks and Recreation classes, making 60 trips. The classes were attended by more than 50 kids this summer.

Overall, SSA-owned boats (the Capri and Holders) made more than 130 trips away from the dock and carried more than 250 people to a sailing adventure on Lake Pend Oreille.

In addition, Sandpoint Sailing Association offers an extensive racing program. Informal racing on 15 Thursday nights put about 120 boats on the water over the summer. Timed races (usually on a Saturday) added about 85 boats on the water. If each of these boats carried four people, our racing program provided at least another 800 sailing adventures on our beautiful lake.

Altogether, SSA was directly involved with getting more than 1,000 kids, adults and family members out sailing this summer. We owe ourselves a great big thank you for the work and dedication all the members of our organization contributed to produce this kind of community impact.

Please come to SSA’s final race and year-end BBQ this Saturday, starting with a skipper’s meeting at 10 a.m. and BBQ at noon. After the BBQ we will hold our annual meeting and then have single elimination racing in the Holders. It will be a fun Saturday to close out a very successful sailing season.
