Parkes, Gleason, Rantala lead Spartans at home meet

| September 26, 2018 1:00 AM

PRIEST RIVER — If you’re a fan of great cross country racing, it was tough to beat the Ivan Benson Invitational last Thursday at Priest River Lamanna High School.

Cameron Parkes clocked a 17:29.3 to finish second on the 5K course that ended on the track, helping lead the Spartan boys to a one-point win in a meet where every place mattered a great deal. The Spartans edged IC Acedemy by one point, Bonners Ferry by 12 points, 4A Lakeland by 18 points and Kellogg by more than 50 in a strong showing.

Caleb Gleason finished third in 18:14, followed by Jordan Phillips in 10th (18:58), Kaden Fulton in 13th (19:36), Coner Burns in 21st (19:56), Brian Lord 25th (20:04), Travis Matthews 28th (20:18), Kyler Lord 36th (21:08), Graden Hanes 38th (21:32) and Bradley Gleason in 48th (23:13) in the field of 53 runners.

Annika Rantala finished third in 21:49, followed by Erika Swoboda in fifth at 22:44 for the Spartan girls, who scored 41 and were edged by Lakeland by just one point in a fantastic girls race, with Bonners Ferry checking in just three points back at 43 in third place of a race with three teams packed unusually tight.

Izzie Schmidt cracked the top 10 in 9th at 23:15, followed by Sharnai Hogan in 11th (23:48), Amber Johnston in 13th (24:14), Kymara Fulton 16th (24:41) and Ainslee Nordby 17th (25:02) for the Spartan girls out of 34 runners.

Both Spartan teams beat the other league teams in attendance, and five of the seven freshmen on both teams set personal bests, which is what every coach hopes to see.

“We are doing really well on both the girls and boys teams so far this season. If we keep healthy, keep our grades up, and keep working hard, our Spartan harriers can do really well at the state level this year,” said head coach Lance Clark. “I have been telling them that each race is like state and state is like each race. We just need to get out strong and be confident, and do our best, and we will do well this year.”

Clark wished to thank the parents and volunteers who helped make the race a success.

“The race went really smooth with all of your help,” he said. “I also want to thank Mr. (Matt) George and Mr. (Jared) Hughes for all of their help. The team appreciates your sacrifice that day.”

The Spartan harriers are at the William Johnson Sandpoint Invitational on Saturday at Travers Park. Racing starts at 9 a.m., with the varsity girls slated for 11:30 a.m. and the varsity boys to follow at noon.
