Head-on crash kills Sagle man

| September 29, 2018 1:00 AM

HOPE — A Sagle man was killed Friday after colliding with a dump truck on Highway 200 on Friday morning, according to Idaho State police

Police said Tommie Casteel was driving eastbound in a Ford pickup truck when he crossed into the opposing lane of traffic and collided with a 1987 Western Star dump truck driven by Jeremy Powell of Clark Fork. The collision caused Powell to lose control of the dump truck, which crossed the center line and crashed into a Jeep Liberty driven by an unidentified juvenile.

Casteel, 20, was ejected from his pickup and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to ISP.

Powell, 39, and the Liberty’s driver and passenger were wearing seat belts, state police said. ISP said it was unclear on Friday if Casteel was wearing safety restraints.

State police said the investigation is ongoing.

The crashes occurred at approximately 7:25 a.m. in an area between the geological site turnout and the Bridge to Nowhere.

The crashes closed the section of highway along Lake Pend Oreille for several hours, according to notifications issued by the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office.
