Sept. 30, 1968 — POLICE BLOTTER

PIGS CHEWED: Mrs. Albee, 1305 Walnut St., reported that large dogs had entered her pig pen and chewed on her pigs.

POP MACHINE CLEANED: Dalby’s Enco station on First Ave. reported that its pop machine had been broken into and coins taken.

KIDS TOSS EGGS: Forrest Wetterow said kids tossed eggs at his house at 520 S. First.

HOME-MADE ICE CREAM AT IGA

Remember home-made ice cream, fresh from a hand-cranked freezer? The way Mrs. Kathryn M. Coker, 520 Pine, makes ice cream is a step above the old fashioned machine and perhaps tastier. This is the home-made ice cream that is such a popular item at Sandpoint IGA.

Mrs. Coker makes all the ice cream in a small machine, capable of five gallons at a time and located in the Sandpoint Ice and Fuel building across Fifth from IGA. She makes about 88 gallons each day, taking about 10 minutes to prepare a batch in the electric freezer. Mrs. Coker has been making ice cream for three years.

For Marley, the home-made ice cream plays an important role in merchandising. Selling for a dollar a gallon, he just breaks even on it. The ice cream is popular among customers, both regulars and visitors and is an excellent advertisement for the supermarket, he said.

Sept. 30, 1918 — OLD GLORY TO GO UP

Fine cedar flagpoles from which old glory will be flung to the breeze were delivered to the court house and city school buildings from the Sommers Bros. camps. The court house flagstaff is 75 ft. long and the one at the Central building is of 90-ft. length. Concrete bases will be put in before a public flag-raising is held.

DR. ANDERSON TO GO TO WAR

Dr. Edward Anderson has been commissioned a captain in the U.S. medical corps and expects to leave within the next two weeks for service. He is making arrangements to close his office here and store his goods. Mrs. Anderson will reside in Spokane while her husband is on war service.

Dr. and Mrs. Anderson came to Sandpoint last May from Weiser. He will return to practice here at the close of his war service.

THANKING THE “DOUGHBOY”

In a letter home, dated Aug. 29, Earl Shutz says of the French, “Day by day the French soldier’s wonder grows at the wonderful speed and efficiency of the Americans and when he speaks of your li’l ol’ Uncle Sammy he grins from ear to ear, throws back his head and lets out a very expressive ‘oo la la’ as a tribute to something he finds beyond the power of words to express. Believe me, the ‘doughboy’ is becoming a greater institution than he ever dreamed of being.”
