Bulldogs rebound with 10-8 win over Asotin

| April 2, 2019 1:00 AM

Lehman brothers Tyler and Auggie cashed in on the bases, and Avery Bocksch’s sixth-inning triple put the exclamation point on the Bulldogs’ 10-8 win over Asotin (Wash.) on Monday afternoon.

The win, Sandpoint’s second of the season, is the latest chapter in the Bulldogs’ early season, which has seen one of either the bats, gloves or pitching step up in any given game, but not all at the same time.

Yet the Asotin win appeared to be one of the more complete performances the Bulldogs have had thus far.

Led by Billy Brackett’s three hits and two RBIs, the offense answered the call every time Asotin tied up the game. Junior Tyler Lehman earned his first win of the with a solid four-strikeout, three-walk and five-run outing — all while going 3-4 in the batters box. And the defense’s five errors might not look good in a vacuum, but the unit rebounded from a critical, game-losing error against Minico on Saturday.

Sandpoint’s resolve was most apparent in the sixth inning. Tyler Lehman singled, then stole second to start the inning. Two quick outs and a 1-2 count on Avery Bocksch later, it seemed like the Bulldogs would strand the junior. But Bocksch battled back, evened up the count and hit a triple into right field to send Lehman home and secure some insurance.

Asotin threatened in the bottom of the sixth by putting a runner on third, but Caleb Davis pitched his way out of trouble with a four-pitch strikeout to end the inning.

The 10-8 win was a bounce-back game after the Bulldogs (2-6) lost 8-7 to Minico to close out the Bucks Bags Tournament on Saturday.

Sandpoint resumes its season after Spring Break with a double-header at Lakeland at 3 p.m.
