SHS softball downed by Centennial, Borah in WTP Classic

| April 2, 2019 1:00 AM

Unlike most Sandpoint students, who had relaxing starts to their spring breaks, Sandpoint softball had a gauntlet.

The Bulldogs played four games in two days against bigger Boise schools in the WTP Classic, and although they are still in search of their first win, head coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams is pleased with the team’s progress thus far.

“The team is coming together quickly this season,” Hawkins-Williams said. “It has been a privilege to watch them battle tough teams this weekend and grow so much in only two days.”

Here’s what happened:

Centennial 20, Sandpoint 2

What happened: The Patriots batted around the order in the first inning, jumped out to a 7-0 lead and didn’t look back.

Sandpoint’s lone runs came from Tanis Davis’s RBI double to send Izzo Edwards home in the third, then RBIs from Riley Cessna and Zoey Barajas in the fourth.

In coach’s words: “Centennial came out aggressive against Tanis Davis, but she worked hard to hit her spots and mix speeds; she struck out two batters. The defense was busy against Centennial, but only committed three errors. It was another great effort for them.”

Borah 14, Sandpoint 3

What happened: The Bulldogs’ bats were quicker to respond this time around, mostly thanks to a two-run homer by Davis in the first inning — the first any Sandpoint batter has hit all season.

With all due respect to Riley Cessna, who went 2-2 in what Hawkins-Williams called “a breakout day,” the Bulldog offense stalled.

The closest the Bulldogs got to staging another surge was in the fourth inning, in which Brooklen Steiger was hit by a pitch to get on base, advanced to third on Cessna’s second single of the day, then scored on an error. Senior Ember Dewey’s ground-out sent Cessna to third, yet the Bulldogs stranded Cessna two outs later.

In coach’s words: “The team was able to limit runs in the game by playing hard. They only committed three errors. I’m very proud of this group for their performance on the field, because they have had limited field time. Their work ethic has paid off and on the field.”

Sandpoint resumes its season on April 9 at 3 p.m. with a double-header at Lakeland.
