April 4, 1969 — FIRE ALARM

Firemen answered a call to 405 Oak, the home occupied by Ed Parkins. They extinguished a fire in a gas clothes dryer which the report stated had a stuck valve. Only damage was to the dryer.

BUILDING PERMIT

The first 1969 city building permit was issued March 20 to Pete Dockins for construction of a frame and metal garage at 721 Poplar St. Value of the building is estimated at $700.

COMMUTE AIR SUSPENDS OPERATION

The last regional airline that included Sandpoint on its schedule shut down March 26. Commute Air said finances forced discontinuation of the regularly scheduled flights. At one time the feeder line had 22 employees.

Although Commute Air had not stopped at Sandpoint during the winter, it had been planned to serve the area after April 1. Another feeder line, Sun Valley Airlines, discontinued service earlier due to high costs of winter operations.

SNEDDEN LETTERS AT WHITMAN

John Snedden, 1967 Sandpoint High graduate, was one of 12 basketball players to receive varsity letters at Whitman College recently.

Snedden started for the Bulldogs in both basketball and football here. He also played American Legion baseball several seasons.

April 4, 1919 — SPUD BUYER HERE

A Kansas City produce buyer who has been buying potatoes in this area the last few days speaks highly of the quality of Bonner county potatoes where the grower takes pains with his seed, selection and grading. He suggests that growers standardize on one or two varieties.

SHERIFF FINDS BREW; NO STILL

When Sheriff Spoor raided the old Frey building, corner of Fourth and Church streets, two pints of whiskey were found, but a search of the premises failed to reveal a worm for the distilling of the brew. The Frey building was recently purchased by Martin Mushrow and opened as a hotel. Mushrow has defended several charges of bootlegging in the past few years.

CITY BREVITIES

The Northern Navigation company is preparing to start its tie mill near the city dock for the summer’s run. Steam was raised at the mill yesterday, but some changes were found necessary and it will probably be several days before the plant will be running steadily.

HIGH SCHOOL NOTES

The school is conducting a campaign against the house-fly by means of posters and pamphlets under direction of the U.S. health service.
