Seventeen area athletes, two teams earn Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame nominations

Sandpoint senior Alex Stockton and Clark Fork senior Brooke Stevens were named finalists for Athlete of the Year in their respective divisions, highlighting a total of 17 area athletes, two coaches and two teams that made the shortlist for Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame awards.

Winners will be announced at the North Idaho Sports Award Banquet, held at the Coeur d’Alene Resort on April 13.

Sandpoint’s girls soccer and swim teams were nominated for 5A-4A Girls Team of the Year awards. Naturally, coaches from both teams — Conor Baranski and Greg Jackson, respectively — also earned nominations for 5A-4A Girls Coach of the Year.

In total, 15 Sandpoint athletes and alumni earned nominations across nine different sports. Athletes whom competed in 2018, plus the 2018-19 winter season were eligible for awards.

The aforementioned Stevens was Clark Fork’s lone nominee, while Priest River’s Cameron Parkes (Boys Cross-Country) was the only Spartan to make the shortlist.

The banquet begins with a social hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Former Seattle Seahawk fullback Mack Strong will be the featured speaker. Also during the evening, former University of Idaho football coach Chris Tormey, former Moscow High and New York Giants offensive lineman Doug Riesenberg, former UI swimmer and volleyball player, and the first UI women’s athlete to receive a scholarship Nancy Monroe, and longtime Pac-12 Conference official Steve Hudson will be inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame.

Tickets for the banquet are $25 apiece and can be purchased online at idahoathletichalloffame.org. Tickets must be purchased by Monday, April 8 to assure seating.

Each athlete nominated for an award will receive a free ticket to the event, but should contact their school’s athletic director to RSVP by April 8.
