April 7, 1969 — MISS SANDPOINT NAMED

Kathy Butler, Hope, was chosen Miss Sandpoint for 1969 Saturday at the finale of the annual pageant sponsored by the Sandpoint Junior Federated Club and Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Butler of Hope, the youngest of five children.

Princesses are: First, Chris Faux; 2nd, Shannon Garvey; 3rd, Mary Ann Butts; 4th, Ivy Rockwell.

Reen Wither was selected Miss Congeniality by the girls in the pageant. Ivy Rockwell, who sang “Words,” was the talent winner. Winner of the swimsuit competition was Pat Lutzke; Mary Ann Butts won the evening gown competition.

FIVE-YEAR-OLD ATTEMPTS AUTO TRIP

After five-year-old Sherry Balch received a nickel from her mother, Mrs. Mike Balch, 524 S. Boyer, on March 24, she decided to go down town to shop.

The small girl got her mother’s car keys from her purse, according to Sandpoint police, and managed to get the car going and in gear. The car traveled down the street more than 200 feet before being stopped by a snowbank.

Part of the episode was witnessed by Mrs. Dallard Johnson, a neighbor. When the girl stalled the car in the snow, she tried to push it back into the road before giving up on her shopping trip.

April 7, 1919 — WOUNDED TWICE

Carl Lidbaum is in Sandpoint on furlough, a guest of his sister, Mrs. John Bolin. He has two wounds, one in his left calf and the other in the back of his head, and a piece of high explosive he took from one of them. That he lived to tell of the battle and his part in it is one of the marvels of the war, for he lay under fire 29 hours before comrades rescued him and he was given first aid.

“I saw the Lost Battalion while on the Argonne front,” Lidbaum told the Review. “What remnant was left was badly shot up.

We were under shell fire every day during our engagement and even when we were back from the lines for a few days’ rest, shells reached us. It was some fight all right.”

COONS SELLS TO PARTNER

County Treasurer Robert Coons has disposed of his interest in the Sandpoint Drug Co., Ltd., to Charles R. Foss, with whom he has been associated in the business for 14 years.

Mr. Foss opened Sandpoint’s first drug store in May 1900, operating under his own name until Oct., 1905, when Mr. Coons became associated with him and the Sandpoint Drug Co., Ltd. was formed. In March 1906, the store moved from its old location on the N.P. right-of-way, to the property where the company’s store is now located (305 N. First). The business will continue under the name of the Sandpoint Drug Co., Ltd. with Mr. Foss as president and manager.
