100 Years Ago — 1919

Car vs. wife

W. C. Torelle is spending a week in Spokane on vacation. He went with the expressed intention of buying a car or getting a wife. He thought the former would be easiest to handle and less expensive.

90 Years Ago — 1929

A big Easter egg hunt was held at the Meegan School. Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. Greene came over and enjoyed it with the kiddies. Over 100 eggs were hidden and all were found except two, still waiting to be found.

80 Years Ago — 1939

Anselmo builds warehouse

Frank H. Anselmo with his ever expanding John Deere machinery has completed on his ranch east of Priest River a fine new warehouse. The building will be used as a sample showroom where all the various implements of the John Deere line commonly used in this section will be on display.

70 Years Ago — 1949

Drive preliminaries under way

According to Bill Whetsler, drive foreman for the Diamond Match, the ice went out on Priest Lake last week and preliminary work on the drive is underway. He expects the drive to be in full swing by next week.

60 Years Ago — 1959

Poirier rites held

Last rites for Mrs. Tillie Poirier, 86, who died in the Spirit Lake hospital, were held Tuesday, April 7, at Newport. Interment was in Fairmont Memorial Park, Spokane. Mrs. Poirier, with her first husband, Elmer Graham, resided in Priest River from 1901 to 1905. They started the first sawmill in this area and also had the first river log drive. Mrs. Poirier is survived by three sons, among them Alfred Graham, Priest River; and two stepsons, Edward Poirier, Priest River, and Fielden Poirier, Blanchard; and one daughter, Mrs. Alice Poirier of Blanchard.

50 Years Ago — 1969

Boat show this weekend

Frank Parsons of Parsons Marina has announced his 12th annual boat show Friday through Sunday and says it will be the biggest boat show yet. Parsons first boat show took place in 1958. He has been in business for 19 years, starting with the Homelite dealership in 1956.

40 Years Ago — 1979

Spartan strength in relay

Coach John McSmith’s power squad, Steve Stewart, Mitch Wardrop, Mike Wear, and Eric Smith, won the 440-yard relay in the track meet at Post Falls. Mark Jones came very close to setting a new Lamanna High School record in the 2-mile run.

30 Years Ago — 1989

DAW asks for burner

DAW has asked for permission to build a waste burner at its Albeni Falls plant. Harry Cowger, plant manager, said the burner would be used only to help rid the site of sawdust as it accumulates. Storage and disposal of mill sawdust has become a problem for several area mills. A large sawdust pile has been smoldering at Albeni Falls since early February. Dave Pisarski of the Idaho air Quality Bureau, said “What we have there is a case of spontaneous combustion. We don’t allow open burning of mill waste unless there is an emergency.” He said spontaneous combustion qualifies as an emergency.

Looking for a logo

The Priest River Chamber has announced a new art contest. This time the Chamber is looking for an appropriate logo for Bonner County’s newest scenic byway, the Panhandle Historic Rivers Passage. That’s Highway 2 between Sandpoint and Newport.

10 Years Ago — 2009

Benson newest Community Star

Panhandle State Bank bestows its annual Community Star award after nominations from the community. Ivan Benson was selected after a letter from Donna Jones. She said he is a “great teacher, coach and friend.”
