Sandpoint tennis falls in close matches against Lewiston

| April 16, 2019 1:00 AM

All of Sandpoint’s No. 1 doubles teams won and Anton Morau and Hadley Goodvin had memorable matches, yet the Bulldogs fell 7-5 as a team against Lewiston on Monday.

“We had a great match today with our arch-rival, Lewiston,” Sandpoint tennis head coach Kent Anderson wrote in an email. “This was a strong showing by the Bulldogs and a sign of what’s to come.”

Of all the matches, none garnered higher praise than Morau’s 10-3 rout of Lewiston’s Wyatt Carper. Although it might not have looked like it in the moment, Monday marked Morau’s first high school singles match.

“Anton stepped in at No. 2 singles today, playing [the] singles match of his life and shocked Lewiston’s Wyatt Carper with his speed, power and finesse,” Anderson said. “He dove for every ball within reach of his racket. His bloodied hand and knee told the story but it was worth the effort. He was all smiles at the end.”

Meanwhile on the girls’ side, Hadley Goodvin returned from vacation and picked up right where she left off in a 10-3 win.

“It was amazing that she could take so much time off and come back with perfect timing on her ground strokes while playing in front of the largest crowd of the match,” Anderson said.”

Sandpoint’s No. 1 doubles teams used second-half comebacks in their wins.

Allura Livingston and Tessa Beeman found themselves down 3-1 before winning nine straight games; Declan Plummer and Christian Story rattled off five points to win 10-5; then Taryn McBride and Carter Johnson came back in mixed doubles to win 10-7.

Sandpoint plays at Post Falls today at 2 p.m.
