Creek, beach clean-up set

SANDPOINT — The community is invited to join Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper and the city of Sandpoint on Saturday, April 20, for the annual shoreline clean-up.

This family-friendly event, which begins at 10 a.m., is a great way to celebrate the Earth by cleaning up the local watershed.

Earth Day is a national day to focus on the environment. Starting in 1970, Earth Day represents the birth of the modern environmental movement.

Celebrated by almost a billion people worldwide, Earth Day is a day of action that sets to change human behavior and provoke policy changes.

What better way to celebrate this day then to get outside and pick up trash that would end up in Lake Pend Oreille and its ecosystem.

The event begins at the City Beach Hut starting at 10 a.m. Once you check in, you will be provided with trash and recycling bags as well as gloves. Evans Brothers Coffee will be providing hot coffee to help fuel your trash collecting.

Organizers also said they will have some doughnuts on hand in case the coffee just is not enough. After participants are fully fueled, they will be sent on your way.

New this year, organizers plan to collect recycling and will provide participants with a separate garbage bag for the recyclables they come across.

“Shoreline cleanups help maintain a sense of ownership and responsibility over our community’s most prized natural resources. Just as you tend to your family and closest friends, when you tend to your favorite water body you feel more connected to it. It makes you feel good!” said Chantilly Higbee of the Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper.
