April 23, 1969 — SAND CREEK SLIDE

A large earth slide April 9 threatened the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Shoemaker, who live three miles north of Sandpoint, and tilted the bed of Sand creek, creating an 11 foot dam. The weight of the fallen debris apparently forced the stream bed upward due to the underlying soil structure. Sand creek cut a new channel, backing water into neighbor Pete Thompson’s pasture.

The Shoemakers took up temporary residence in a mobile home. The slide dropped earth away from as near as four feet to their back door. The Shoemakers believe they will have to move their home away from the creek bank.

MRS. MADSEN ELECTED DELEGATE

Mrs. Harold Andersen, Mrs. Gerald Madsen, Mrs. Allen Cochran, Mrs. Wayne Sundgren and Mrs. Gaylord Nordgaarden attended the annual meeting of the Inland Empire Girl Scout Council at Ft. George Wright College. Mrs. Madsen was elected to a three-year term to the National council, which meets in October in Seattle. She has been active in Girl Scouting as a leader and troop organizer for Washington School.

CARMACK – STEHWIEN WED

In a double-ring wedding ceremony March 16, Miss Patricia J. Carmack became the bride of Stanley R. Stehwien. Rev. Geo. Hougham, First Methodist Church, officiated at the ceremony held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lanny Hansen.

April 23, 1919 – SELLS YORKVIEW DAIRY

George York sold 60 acres of his 160-acre tract west of the city to Joseph J. Shields, from Magna, Utah. Mr. Shields also purchased from the Humbird Lumber company 100 acres west of the York 60 acres. The acreage purchased from Mr. York includes the building of the Yorkview dairy, but not the milk route, which for the present will be continued under Mr. York’s management.

Mr. Shields is an experienced dairyman and intends to stock the farm with about 30 head of thoroughbred stock he will ship in from Utah. He has returned to Utah for his family.

COMPANY A TO START SOON

According to a letter written by James Piatt to his mother, Mrs. Martin Piatt, old company A will soon start for home. Piatt, with Battery D, 146th, told his mother not to reply as they will be starting for home before a letter could reach him.

BIG DEMAND FOR CHEVROLETS

“Sales of the Chevrolet car already this season are beyond my expectations,” said F.F. Reem today. “The Reem company (209 Cedar) sold four Chevrolets this week and I have booked orders for several more.” Making purchases this week were O.J. Bandelin, John Elsasser, Thomas H. Kerr and the Interstate Telephone company.
