Help available to find path to a healthier, happier you

| April 24, 2019 1:00 AM

True confession time: My addiction is and most likely always will be shoes.

High stilettos, strappy sandals, sling-back, open toed peeps, the classic pump, high heeled boots, sneakers, flip flops, wedges … every color, every print, sparkly, polka-dot, pin-striped, etc. You name it.

I dream of shoes. I’ve invented my own shoes by gluing metal pieces, feathers, shiny stones and even tiny pieces of wallpaper to different shoes that were originally a tad boring for my style. To say I love shoes is a complete understatement.

Some people, however, are addicted to other things. And for some people, that addiction is food.

People who are addicted to food tend to display many of the same characteristics of drug addicts and alcoholics. Addicts of food develop a physical, mental, emotional craving and chemical addiction to food.

Are you a food addict? Do you find yourself obsessing about food? Are you preoccupied with what you are going to eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner?

Do you lack self-control when it comes to food? Do you stop eating when you are full or when your plate is clean?

Despite the negative consequences, people continue to overeat until their waistlines are expanding, their knees and ankles can no longer handle the additional load, they are always tired and have no energy and their physician has prescribed more medication to treat high blood pressure, depression, insomnia, etc. Why not address the problem?

Stop using food to create a sense of pleasure and comfort.

Have you tried but failed to control your eating? Can you eat clean for a day only to slip up the next day? Has the media confused you on what a nutritionally sound way of life looks like? Do you have feelings of guilt or remorse after eating? Do you eat because of your emotions? Do you provide healthy meals for your children, or does the cycle repeat itself?

Although we live in a small community, there are many programs, classes and trainers available to provide you with a clear path towards a healthier you. But, YOU need to pick up the phone and reach out for help. Don’t be afraid to ask. With open arms, we are all here to help.
