ENGINEERS WORK ON LEVEE

The Army Corps of Engineers authorized two emergency projects in Bonner county to reduce the flood threat expected after last winter’s heavy snowpack. Riprap is being replaced along 500 feet of the levee on the right bank of Lightning Creek, just upstream from the U.S. Highway 10 bridge, to lessen the danger of failure of the levee and an inundation of the town of Clark Fork.

Timber bents and support pilings under the Clark Fork river bridge, one-half mile upstream from the town, will be removed to preclude possible washout, resultant damage to down-stream debris collection facilities, and the escape of debris into Lake Pend Oreille.

CITY BREVITIES

Sunday when the Sandpoint canteen met the N.P., Mrs. B.S. Bennett found nine members of her son’s, Capt. Lee Bennett’s company B. They told her their captain went through without a scratch though many of his men were killed. They said Lee was a great favorite with his men. When he received his commission in the regular army, they had to bid him farewell at Brest after he got orders to report to the army of occupation in Germany, instead of coming across with his men as expected. The men gave three cheers for “their captain’s mother” as the train pulled out.
