SANDPOINT — The Bonner County Sportsmen’s Association is hosting a youth sign-up for the 8th annual National Rifle Association’s Sons & Daughters Day at the Range on Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, June 16.

The free event is being held at the city of Sandpoint’s outdoor shooting range on Baldy Mountain (113 Turtle Rock Road).

The event encouraging taking sons and daughters to the range for a day of safety education, shooting and family bonding. Shooting sports are a great way to build self esteem.

The event is sponsored by Brownells/NRA Day and hosted by the sportsmen’s association and Sandpoint Parks & Recreation.

Participants can register online (secure.rec1.com/ID/city-of-sandpoint/catalog). Registration can also be done at City Hall. Only 14 spots per session are available and are issued on a first come/first serve basis.

The event will be held rain or shine.

Brad Kruger, the NRA Western Regional Director, is again teaching all of the safety sessions, and Bill Moody, head range master, will be gathering the volunteer range safety officers and instructors to help teach the live-fire portion of the classes.

The Idaho Department of Fish & Game has donated $300 toward the food and snacks for the adult volunteers and youth participants. Donna and Richard Hutter donated another $200 toward this to support the program. North 40 Outfitters has given $500 in $5 gift certificates so that each youth that completes the class receives a gift certificate as an award.

The Friends of the NRA gave a grant toward the ammunition for the event. Many individuals donated other prizes.
