April 30, 1969 — SENIORS RECEIVE AID

Three Sandpoint High School athletes recently received athletic grants-in-aid from area colleges.

Ralph Sletager, a 3-year football letterman and 2-year basketball starter, signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Idaho.

Steve Ammerman, also a 3-year football letterman, and Bob Moore, a 2-year starter, have indicated they will play for Spokane Community college next year. Ammerman was also a star quarter miler in track until sidelined by an injury.

Another multiple-sport Sandpoint athlete, Scott Wyatt, a basketball starter the last two seasons and one of the leading track scorers, has been accepted at Stanford University on a full academic scholarship.

CEDAR POST RATED SUPERIOR

The SHS student newspaper, the Cedar Post, was awarded a superior rating at the 23rd annual High School Journalism Conference at the University of Idaho. Editor-in-chief Donna Brown accepted the award. The Sandpoint staff was also awarded third place in the state in news writing.

Marcia Sodorff, Cedar Post news co-editor, took home the first place plaque in the sports writing contest, the fourth time in six years that a Cedar Post reporter has won that contest.

A total of 16 Sandpoint journalism students made the trip to the 1½ day conference with their advisor Bob Hamilton and teacher Terry Iverson.

The school children celebrated Arbor day by going to the woods and getting a number of trees and setting them out in the school yard. If they grow, they will be an improvement.

This is a busy time, not much doing socially. Farmers who are not plowing are burning stumps.

CAPTAIN CONNER GETS OVATION

A crowd estimated at 2000 people greeted the Victory loan trophy train Thursday. The exhibit of war relics was the center of keen interest on the part of Sandpoint people, but their chief enthusiasm was reserved for the first appearance of Captain A.H. Conner since his service overseas and his recovery from the wound he received in the Argonne. The captain made a 15-minute speech in support of the Victory loan, at the close of which he was given an ovation of cheers, and the rest of the time the train was in town he was kept busy shaking hands and answering questions.
