COEUR D’ALENE — It’s tough to beat any team when a player goes off and unfortunately for Sandpoint girls basketball that’s what happened Tuesday night.

Lake City’s Aubrey Avery dropped 30 points and knocked down five first half three-pointers to help the Timberwolves hand the Bulldogs a 67-40 loss and their third defeat of the season.

“I was really proud of the effort all 32 minutes,” Sandpoint head coach Will Love said. “Lake City played really well and we need to correct some things but effort wise it was there from all of the players throughout the entire game. When they got down our kids remained positive.”

After having 10 days off between games due to Thanksgiving break, the Bulldogs were hoping to come out strong against Lake City but they fell behind 23-7 after the first quarter.

It didn’t get much better in the second quarter either as the Timberwolves took a 41-13 advantage into halftime.

Sandpoint came out in the second half and showed they weren’t going down without a fight.

The Bulldogs outscored 5A Lake City 27-26 in the final 16 minutes of action but it wasn’t enough as Lake City held on for a 27 point victory.

Love said he was proud of the resilience his team showed in the second half.

Senior Dawson Driggs led the way with 12 points while freshman Kelsey Cessna continued an impressive start to her varsity career tallying 7 points.

Nine Bulldogs scored in the game and Love was encouraged by the depth he saw from his team.

“At some point, the offensive floodgates are going to open for [us] so there’s a lot of good things we can take away from this,” he said.

The Bulldogs (1-3) will head to Shadle Park 7 p.m. Friday.
