Bulldog wrestling tops Newport, Priest River in a pair of duals
NEWPORT, Wash. — Sandpoint wrestling defeated Newport 48-33 and Priest River 60-18 on Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs are currently undefeated through three duals this season.
In the dual with Newport, Sandpoint head coach Jake Stark was proud of the performance of his lightweights who earned pins at 106, 113, 120, 126 and 138 pounds courtesy of Kayelin Otterson, Tanner Dickson, Jordan Birkhimer, Raphael Eldridge and Malachi Fleck.
Senior Brady Nelson fell just short of a victory at 152 pounds for the second straight dual, losing 7-5 to Newport’s Nate Allen.
Senior Isaiah Caralis continued his strong start to the season, earning a pin one minute into the first round of his 160 bout while senior Evan Twineham grabbed a pin over Newport’s Connor Adams at 285.
Overall, the Bulldogs won eight of the 14 matches against the Grizzlies including seven by pin and one by forfeit.
“Guys were firing on all cylinders and we looked good against Newport,” Stark said.
The second dual of the night against Priest River was lopsided. The Spartans were shorthanded and forced to forfeit a handful of matches while Sandpoint rolled out a full lineup.
Caralis, Fleck, Forest Ambridge and Christian Troumbley—Karkoski all won their matches by pin and the Bulldogs accepted six match victories by forfeit.
Senior Jake Suhr lost his match as he was pinned by Priest River’s Truxton Wilson. Birkhimer and Eldridge also fell by pin in their matches.
Stark said he is encouraged by the growth and comradery he has seen from his team so far this season.
“We have great team unity,” he said. “The guy’s wrestle together, everybody’s on the same page. We definitely improved from the Bonners Ferry match.”
The Bulldogs will head to Kellogg 6 p.m. Friday for a dual and stay the night to compete in the George Wild Tournament on Saturday along with 18 other teams.
