Native bees focus of upcoming class

Did you know North Idaho is home to almost 600 native, hive-less bees?

As part of a native beekeeping class later this month, participants will learn about two of these species of bees: the Spring Blue Orchard Mason Bee and the Summer Leaf Cutter Bee. Both are docile, non-aggressive, and safe for families and pets.

Area residents are invited to a beekeeping class being held as part of the 2019 University of Idaho and Idaho Master Gardener’s Annual Horticulture Class Series.

“Native Beekeeping for Spring and Summer Pollination,” is set for Feb. 16, planned for 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Kootenai County Administration Building, Lower Level, 451 N. Government Way, in Coeur d’Alene. The cost is $10; pre-registration and payment are required.

The class is presented by Kara Carleton, Idaho Master Gardener coordinator.

Class participants will learn to build nests and create habitats for these and other native pollinators, as well as how to grow more food with native bees. One Mason Bee has the pollination ability of 100 honey bees. Mason and Leaf Cutter Bees are also better able to distribute pollen flower-to-flower than honey bees. Already keeping honey bees? They can coexist with the correct resources.
