101 Women, Sandpoint grants $10,000 award to CCS

| February 6, 2019 12:00 AM

A program that provides gas vouchers to local cancer patients recently got a boost to their bottom line with a $10,000 grant from 101 Women, Sandpoint.

Community Cancer Services Bonner County, a local non-profit organization, won the grant award at 101 Women’s most recent membership meeting. The group received more votes than the other two finalists to bring home the $10,000 award.

The funds will provide 667 gas vouchers for cancer patients to use for transportation to and from cancer treatment related medical appointments. Cancer Care Services (CCS) provides an average of 180 gas vouchers each month. The vouchers help ease a portion of the financial strain affecting patients and their caregivers during this difficult time in their lives.

Cancer Care Services is a non-profit organization (also known as Heather’s House) whose mission is to provide support to local cancer patients, families and caregivers in the form of financial aid, counseling services, and needed durable goods. The group strives to improve both the comfort and quality of life for those affected by cancer and to educate the community on all aspects of cancer from prevention to end of life issues.

The $10,000 grant to Cancer Care Services is provided through the generous donations of 101 local women. 101 Women, Sandpoint donate two $10,000 grants each year to Bonner County non-profit organizations. The group’s funding includes a wide focus area with only religious and political groups excluded.

101 Women Sandpoint’s new grant cycle is currently open and the group encourages all Bonner County non-profits to fill out the simple online application at www.101womensandpoint.com before the spring grant cycle ends March 1.

Three finalists will be chosen from those that apply through a vetting process and site visits. The three finalists will then be asked to give a short presentation at the group’s spring meeting in April.

During the most recent grant process, the other two finalists included the Kaniksu Land Trust Summer Camp program and the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint. The Kaniksu Land Trust is raising money to provide outdoor education and recreation for area youth through their camp program and the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint is raising money for their Music Matters! program that provides after school orchestras, ensembles and choirs to any interested child in the greater Sandpoint community.
