| February 6, 2019 12:00 AM

A Spirit Lake resident was among the 761 Montana State University undergraduates who received diplomas during MSU’s 2018 fall commencement ceremonies held Dec. 15 in Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

Ryan Richardson of Spirit Lake graduated with honors from Montana State.

To qualify for graduation with honors, Montana State students must possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 to 3.69.

Lynette Stein-Chandler, who dedicated her life to pulling the Aaniiih language from the brink of extinction before she died suddenly at age 41, posthumously received an honorary doctorate in letters. Wayne Stein, professor emeritus of Native American Studies and Stein-Chandler’s father, accepted the degree and also spoke to the graduates.

Also during the ceremony, MSU President Waded Cruzado presented the President’s Medallion to Norm Asbjornson for his continued support of the university and its programs. The medallion is presented to those who have made significant contributions to the educational, cultural, economic, scientific and social advancement of MSU and the region.
