I read with interest in a recent Daily Bee article, Lake Pend Oreille School District Superintendent Shawn Woodward’s explanation of why the school district needs a 49-ercent increase in its supplemental levy come March. His arguments fell flat with me, but it gets worse once you realize what else this school district has up its sleeve for us in levies.

Last summer, Woodward began laying the groundwork for a facilities levy. He denies as “false information” that it’s going to happen this August, but he’s not denying that it will happen. Idaho school levies can be run in four months of any year — March, May, August and November. Given the preparations already underway, watch for it to surface in one of those upcoming months, and the mindboggling price tag being discussed makes the supplemental levy seem like peanuts.

A 24-member Citizens Facilities Advisory Committee was appointed by Woodward last summer to come up with recommendations to the school board about which school buildings should be torn down or remodeled, and they will “most likely result in a property tax measure,” according to committee minutes. A property tax measure is, of course, a facilities levy or a bond.

Architects and engineers have already issued a hefty report that reveals the $39 million price tag for this levy or bond.

When will LPOSD’s greed stop? When citizens inform themselves and vote “no.”
