John Schelling

John Charles Schelling died peacefully in his sleep Nov. 13, 2018. He was 91.

A native of Exeter, California, he was the son of Ivan and Hildegard Schelling and stepmother Muriel Schelling. John is survived by his wife, Ramona of 71 years. Along with his wife, John is missed by his son John and daughter Rhonna Crook, daughter-in-law Hannah, son-in law-Andy and sister-in-law Pam Kalender. He was predeceased by his sister Pat Davidson

In addition John has three grandchildren, Heather, Jamie and Michelle; and five great-grandchildren, Jackson, Madison, Emilia, Skylar and Ria.

John grew up in Exeter and He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Pearl Harbor Day. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy he went into the family business with his father at Schelling’s Men’s Wear clothing store, a long time business in Exeter. While working at the clothing store John was taking night classed at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif. After several years in the clothing business he decided to go back to college fulltime and pursue a degree in agronomy.

John attended Fresno State University. After graduation he and Ramona had several assignments in New Mexico, Nevada and California with the USDA Department of Soil Science.

Upon retirement John and Ramona settled in Sandpoint, Idaho. Always active in his community John participated in Habitat for Humanity and the Lions Club. For many years he was involved with the Fourth of July Children’s Parade and helping at local soup kitchens.

He was a past master of the Masonic Blue Lodge and a 32nd degree member of the Scotish Rite. While in Nevada he was a member of Kiwians Club.

For many years he was a member of the United Methodist Church. During his involvement with the church in Idaho, John went to neighboring communities to give the Sunday sermons. He spent many years going to the prison in Walla Walla, Wash., sharing his ministry.

His spirit and laughter live on and remind us daily to smile and be happy.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.
