Feb. 19, 1969 — MODERN LAUNDRAMAT

Armand Gendreau, Modern Cleaners owner, will open The Modern Laundramat at the corner of Fifth and Poplar this weekend. A completely automatic operation, it will feature 20 top-loading washers and eight dryers. The firm is carpeted throughout in deep red, against a backdrop of beige walls. The washers are aqua blue.

Contractors who helped ready the operation were Dick Pedersen, gas; Bud Welter, electrical and Fred Williams, general contractor.

ENJOYED HAWAIIAN VACATION

Mrs. R.F. McFarland and Mrs. William Lindt returned recently from a delightful 8-day trip to Hawaii. They flew from Spokane to Honolulu and spent seven days basking in the sunshine and warm temperatures of the islands, a welcome change from the winter weather here.

WEATHER NOT YET A THREAT

Conservation Officer Marion Rhodes, Sandpoint, assures those concerned with the welfare of elk and deer in North Idaho that they are getting along well in the Bonner-Boundary County area. “They are getting by better than one might think,” he said, “as the snow, though deep, is light and fluffy in the wooded area.” Rhodes said deer and elk get about and feed more easily than one might think from conditions elsewhere in open farmlands and in towns.

Feb. 19, 1919 — TAFT PASSES THROUGH

Northern Pacific No. 3 carried former President Taft and a party of distinguished men through Sandpoint Saturday to keep a speaking date in Spokane to awaken public sentiment on the question of a League of Nations. A number of people were at the depot, though it was not generally known the party would be on that train.

LOCAL BRIEFS

Two fine specimens of German officers’ helmets are on exhibit in the Himes studio, sent to Mrs. Martin Piatt by her son, James.

Some 20 or 30 people were at the N.P. depot Saturday night to see former President Taft as he passed through on his way to Spokane.

Mrs. Hayes, the visiting nurse, asks that parents of school children exercise great care when their children are sick, not to send others of the same family to school until the sick one is examined by a physician or nurse. A case or two of influenza has been discovered in the past few days, and special caution is enjoined upon parents in order to avoid another outbreak of the disease.

B.S. Baker, Sandpoint’s first town marshal, has been looking up old friends here the past week, after an absence of 13 years during which he has developed a large stock ranch in Alberta.

George Washington’s birthday ball at the Liberty, Friday, Feb. 21. Every one invited.
