They used to use urine to tan animal skins in the very old days, so families used to pee in a pot and then sold it to the tannery. If you had to do this to survive, you were, “piss poor.” But worse than that were the really poor folks, who couldn’t even afford to buy a pot, thus the saying “they don’t have a pot to piss in.”

Of course in today’s age, it is referred to people who have spent all their money and don’t have any saved. My mother, Genevieve Gregory, used to say “ Look at those would be big shots prancing around, they don’t have a pot to piss in.”
