Entertainment star shines brightly in community

SANDPOINT – Winter Carnival leads the way again this week, with events all over town. Adding to the fun, we’ve got ‘A Star Is Born’ hitting the big screen at the Panida starting tonight, the world premiere of a new Patrick F. McManus musical comedy at the Panida on Friday and Sunday, live comedy both Friday and Saturday nights at the 219 Lounge and the third installment in a creative writing workshop series Saturday at The Library.

On Tuesday, DiLuna’s Café hosts John Craigie for a special dinner concert.

Thursday, Feb. 21

Sandpoint Community Sing

Venue: Downtown Yoga, 301 Cedar St., Suite106, Sandpoint.

Time: 7-8:30 p.m.

Community singing is the timeless ritual of coming together with others to co-create a rich musical experience through voice. Sandpoint Community Sing is a 90-minute weekly journey of songs about nature, life, love, emotions, activism, peace and the overall human experience. Songs are taught in the oral tradition of call and response. No singing or musical experience is necessary. Come with a desire to use your voice, learn songs and connect joyfully through singing with others. Led by Kristine Rae.

‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5 p.m.

An author enjoyed success writing biographies on the likes of Tallulah Bankhead, Dorothy Kilgallen, and Estée Lauder, but no one wanted her next book, which left her desperate.

‘My Favorite Toy Was Dirt’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

It’s the world premiere of “My Favorite Toy Was Dirt: An American Story in Concert” — an original comedy written by Patrick F McManus and starring Tim Behrens vs. 7 Musicians.

It’s a kind of ‘Musical’ McManus Comedy with music by Olivia Brownlee, and it is scored for 7 musicians v. 1 actor. Think Mark Twain meets Spike Jones.

A great night of live comedy headlined by Michael Winslow and featuring Phillip Kopczynski with Morgan Preston as host. Winslow solidified himself as a pop culture icon when he played the hilariously mischievous Larvelle Jones in the Police Academy franchise. Spokane-based Phillip Kopczynski is fresh off placing second at the 2018 Seattle International Comedy Competition.

Admission: $20 in advance, $25 at the door for those 21 and over.

Heartbreak Pass

Winter Creative Writing Series

Venue: Rude Girls Room at the East Bonner County Library, 1407 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Literary magazine and book editors/publishers Christopher Howell, founding director of Lynx House Press; Polly Buckingham, editor of Stringtown and Willow Springs magazines; Jonathan Frey, editor of NIC’s Trestle Creek Review, Matt Holloway, fiction editor of the Whitefish Review, and Christine Holbert, founding director of Lost Horse Press answer questions about publishing and how to submit your work in this one-day workshop intended for experienced as well as emerging writers and poets.

Admission: The workshop is free and open to all creative writers, but you must register in advance.

Winter Carnival K-9 Keg Pull

Venue: The Granary (next to Evan’s Brothers Coffee Roasters on Church St.)

Time: Registration starting at 9 a.m., races going until noon

One of Sandpoint’s most popular events, Eichardt’s annual K-9 Keg Pull is held at the Granary with dogs of all sizes racing down a snow-packed course pulling anywhere from full-size kegs to beer cans for a cheering crowd. A great, local, family friendly event!

Admission: Free and open to the public. Keg Pull $10 entry fee donation goes to the Panhandle Animal Shelter.

‘Yoga N Tunes’
