100 Years Ago—1919

Lindsley Bros. hauling poles

The heavy snowfall is responsible for the Lindsey Brothers pole company starting four 4-horse teams hauling poles to town. Sunday night was the coldest night of the winter, being minus two degrees in the early hours Monday. The heaviest snowfall of the winter followed Monday evening, dropping 10 inches on the level.

90 Years Ago—1929

They danced till 3 a.m.

Sixty-five to seventy people attended an old-time dance given at the Huff home Saturday night and a good old time was had by all. At midnight supper was served, the kind you read about. Bill Sutliff sang some songs, accompanied by the guitar. We danced until 3 o’clock, and then reluctantly broke up to try to get our cars out of the snowbank in time to get home to milk our cows on time.

80 Years Ago—1939

Diseased whitefish found in lakes

Wm. Whetsler and Ellis Fry, in making a trip to Priest Lake two weeks ago, found that the whitefish there are in practically the same condition as those found in Lake Pend d’Oreille. The boys caught some 50-odd fish and found none that were fit to keep. .

70 Years Ago—1949

Cougar hounds shot

Otho savage and Neil Stewart had the misfortunate of losing their hounds when they were hunting in the Spirit Lake and Twin Lakes territory. The dogs were shot by a farmer who told Coeur d’ Alene Conservation Officer Jack Costello that they were running a buck. Killing dogs running deer is one thing, but killing cougar dogs is defeating the purpose of protecting deer from cougar. The hounds had never been known to ever jump a deer.

60 Years Ago—1959

School building hazardous

Fire Chief Don Van Vleet and members of the Priest River Fire Dept., assisted by Arthur Chubb, Sandpoint Fire Dept. chief, inspected the Priest River school buildings and issued a report that the grade school building is a very fire hazardous building.

50 Years Ago—1969

First dog sled races held

Twenty-six teams so far are entered in the first annual dog sled races sponsored by the Priest Lake Sportsmen’s Association March 1 and 2 six miles below Nordman on the Kilstadius-Kedish-Jones meadows.

60 Years Ago—1979

Laundry problems pose mystery

Deputy Doug Bradbury is missing a pair of pants, and a shirt with a Moses Lake Fire Department patch came back in their place with this week’s laundry bundle, giving the officers a mystery to solve. Where are Doug’s pants?

30 Years Ago—1989

PR joins anti-phosphate move

The sale of phosphate detergents in the city of Priest River was banned Monday night by the city council. The council followed the Sandpoint City Council and five other North Idaho communities by banning the cleaning agent.

20 Years Ago — 1999

Bookshelf encourages reading

Some 50-60 youngsters per day are being served by the “Bulldog Bookshelf,” a new idea to encourage Idaho Hill students to read, said school aid Marsha Cork last week. The bookshelf, which was Cork’s brain child, occupies a section of hallway. .

10 Years Ago — 2009

Wrestlers take district tourney

Priest River made it three in a row at the 3A District 1-2 trifecta with a senior-laden team and a school-record 16 state qualifiers. The Spartans were a runaway train, winning with 240 points.

Orofino was a district second at 163. “We’ve been building the program and it’s paying off,” said Spartan coach Brandon Keinert.
