The Inside Edge: SAARS, Independence prep for Northwest Cup Races

WORLD CUP UPDATE — Mikaela Shiffrin won the Slalom at Semmering, Austria on Dec. 30. The win — her 36th slalom win of her career — surpassed her childhood hero, Austrian skiier Marlies Schild, and made her the winningest slalom racer ever.

Not only that, Shiffrin’s 15th World Cup win set the new all-time record of wins in a year; the previous record of 14 wins in a year was held by Austrian Marcel Hirscher. Shiffrin

The 23-year-old also finished second in the City Event (side-by-side elimination Slalom) in Oslo, Norway on Jan. 1. She finished .39 seconds behind Slovakia native Petra Vlhova. Before that race, Shiffrin was atop the World Cup standings with 1,034 points.

Meanwhile on the men’s side, Ryan Cochran finished in 22nd place, followed closely by Steve Nyman in 23rd, in the Super G at Bormio, Italy.

JUNIOR RACE SERIES KICK-OFF — The Junior Race Series kicks off this Friday, Jan. 4. Meet your team and coaches in the base lodge at 5 p.m. ready to go.

NO BULL RACES — The first Northwest Cup Races will be hosted by Crystal Mountain, WA this weekend. Both SAARS and Independence are sending athletes. Read next week’s edition of the Inside Edge for a full report on how both teams fared.
