Time to tame the ageism elephant

| January 8, 2019 12:00 AM

SANDPOINT — It’s time to address the elephant in the room — ageism.

That topic will take center stage at today’s Geezer Forum, from 2-4 p.m. in the Columbia Bank’s Community Room in the Columbia Bank building, 414 Church, from 2-4 p.m.

Over the last few years, “Dear Geezer” columnist Paul Graves has shared a few columns here about ageism, first writing about the ageism elephant over six years ago. One of the silly sayings he coined was this: “Until you name the elephant in the room, you have no chance to housebreak it.”

So when the Geezer Forum meets for the first Geezer Forum of 2019, it will be a chance to laugh at and maybe housebreak the ageism elephant in the room. The program will check out some slides of ageist humor and most likely laugh at them — because they can be both clever and funny. But, they also will also be examined to see if they leave folks feeling “put down” or “lifted up” by that humor. Geezer Forum is hosted by Paul Graves, writer of “Dear Geezer” in The Daily Bee.
