SANDPOINT — A Bonner County man was ordered held in lieu of $25,000 bail on Tuesday after being accused of first-degree kidnapping and felony assault charges, court records show.

Jayden Mark Day is accused of holding a woman against her will in his pickup truck and battering her on Monday, according to a Bonner County sheriff deputy’s probable cause affidavit. Day also allegedly swerved into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer on U.S. Highway 2 and told the woman “I’ll end it all now,” the affidavit states.

The woman grabbed the steering wheel and took evasive action to avoid the collision, according to court documents.

The woman told investigators that she had previously dated Day, but they are currently friends and were camping together in the Freeman Lake area, court records indicate. She said an argument developed over a dog while they were driving.

During the argument, Day began hitting her, which prompted the woman to put her back against the interior of the passenger door to fend of the attack with her legs and feet, the affidavit said. The woman managed to call 911, but hung up, the affidavit said. She took a photo of her location during the incident, which enabled law enforcement to locate the Dodge Ram pickup truck she was riding in.

Day, 18, made an initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court on Tuesday via video feed from the Bonner County Jail, court records show. Judge Tera Harden set Day’s bail and appointed a public defender to represent him. An order barring Day from contacting the woman was also entered.

A preliminary hearing on the kidnapping and aggravated assault charges is set for Jan. 23. Day is further charged with misdemeanor battery for striking the woman.
