How did Pelosi end up as Speaker of the House?

I would like someone, anyone to explain to me how a person in California can run for the office of representative for the Congress of the United States of America twice and win in their district by only some 67,000-plus votes and without a true formal education and basic actual common sense could end up as the Speaker of the House controlling almost every Democrat in the House of Representatives?
