County jobless rate jumps

Bonner County’s unemployment rate rose once again in December. The jobless rate jumped from 6.9 percent in November to 7.7 percent in December. The figures released this week by the Idaho Department of Labor are just the latest in a months-long trend that has seen the county’s unemployment rate more than double in a year’s time, from 3.3 percent in December 2007.

Owners prep to rebuild

The Appliance Shoppe, owned by Richard and Terri Kim, was destroyed in a fire on Dec. 29. The charred remains of the shop were torn down Thursday by Jim Hughes. Saturday the Priest River Fire Department burned the remains, to be hauled to the Bonner County Sanitary Landfill near Oldtown. The Kims plan to build a retail appliance store as soon as possible.

40 Years Ago — 1979

New bank, new doctor coming

Approval from the Comptroller of the Currency has been received by the First National Bank of North Idaho to open a branch office in Priest River, expected to open in the spring in temporary quarters on a tentative location east of the Timberline Center parking lot.

Final arrangements between Kaniksu Clinic and Dr. Charles Falter have been made and he is expected to be in Priest River in April to paint and remodel the medical portion of the clinic and open his practice as quickly after July 1 as possible.

50 Years Ago — 1969

Thrift Shop tells success story

The Thrift Shop, a business enterprise of the Congregational United Church of Christ, has enjoyed unusually good business during the past year under the management of Mr. and Mrs. John Caprai. The shop took in $2,683.16 in gross receipts and made a net profit of $1, 238.04 after operating expenses were deducted.

60 Years Ago — 1959

Last rites held for pioneer

William Michael Long, pioneer of this community, died Jan. 17 at the Butte, Mont. Hospital. He was 85. Mr. Long was born at Nashville, Tenn., July 20, 1873. He came to Bonner County as a young man and homesteaded in the Blue Lake country in 1891. He was employed as a state game warden for many years.

70 Years Ago — 1949

Tax bite named

Each resident of Bonner County will pay approximately $297 as his share of maintaining the county, state and federal governments, it was announced by the Idaho State Chamber of Commerce and the Associated Taxpayers of Idaho.

80 Years Ago — 1939

Another pioneer passes

In the passing of John E. Hanson of the Priest Lake country, this section loses another of its pioneers. Mr. Hanson died at Hot Springs, Mont., Jan. 23. He came to the Priest River valley in 1982 and in the early days did much trapping. In later years he operated a ranch this side of Nordman, his holdings being generally known as Hanson Meadows. Born at Clinton, Iowa, and a bachelor, he would have been 70 years old on his next birthday.

People’s Market moving in

The Harvey Wright building on the corner of Main and High streets is being remodeled for occupancy by the People’s Market, Hill and Robinson. They plan to move from the Beardmore Block about the last of the month.

100 Years Ago — 1919

Walkout at Camp 10

Seventy men walked out of Humbird camp 10 because one man was discharged without cause, according to what one of the men told the Times. The foreman claimed the man was a Wobbly delegate, but the men ruled this was not sufficient reason for his discharge, as long as he was doing his work satisfactorily.
