SanRoman's big night not enough for Clark Fork

Freshman point guard Carter SanRoman’s 13 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists were decidedly not freshman-esque, yet the Wampus Cats fell 52-28 to Sandpoint’s JV team on Friday night.

“[SanRoman] really controlled the game,” Clark Fork head coach Heath Beason said. “To be able to run the offense as a freshman, I think he has a very key role in our offense and defense. I’ve put a lot of pressure on him as a freshman, but he’s held up well under that pressure.”

SanRoman traded buckets with the Sandpoint Bulldogs by himself in the first half; he scored Clark Fork’s first seven points while forcing two Sandpoint turnovers during his opening salvo.

Precise passing and deliberate movement on Sandpoint’s offense eventually won out, as the Bulldogs took advantage of Clark Fork’s second-quarter stall and, in turn, controlled the rest of the game. Led by Max Thielbahr’s passing in transition, Stone Lee’s scoring and a balanced team rebounding effort, the Bulldogs used a 12-2 run in the second quarter to cruise to victory.

“They outplayed us up and down the court, Beason said. “We got complacent and couldn’t find our way out.”

Lee led Sandpoint with 15 points, while freshman Ethan Butler chipped in nine points and four rebounds. Cameron Garcia also had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double for Clark Fork.

The Wampus Cats resume league play at Kootenai on Jan. 29.
