Conviction sustained

Had William Vane, who committed suicide in the Newport Jail, lived to serve the penalty of his misdeeds, he would have found that all of his appeals to state and federal courts were in vain. Last week word was received that the Supreme Court had sustained his conviction on a larceny charge in a Spokane court in the fall of 1917.

Big chill hits region

The cold front and strong winds that moved into Priest River last Tuesday night quickly let their presence be known. Schools closed Wednesday, trees blocked roads and crashed into houses after being ripped out of the ground by 30 mph winds. Roofing blew off houses and telephone lines came tumbling down. The number of trees blocking roadways was too much for city crew members, and the city hired extra workers to help. Temperatures were as low as minus 30 degrees on Friday night.

Remember Y2K?

About 25 people gathered at the Blue Lake Community Club hall Saturday night got a sobering picture of the kinds of problems computer glitches could cause when the year 2000 (Y2K0) dawns. Then they agreed to meet again this Saturday night to further explore the problem and learn what they can do to prepare for what may or may not be a major problem.
