Audiobooks are a great way to 'read'

| July 12, 2019 1:00 AM

The thing about audiobooks is that the measure of a good one isn’t just about the content. A good audiobook needs to have a great narrator and sometimes even involves some sound effects. The quality of the jingle before and after the narration should also be weighed in.

I’m big into audiobooks because I spend enough time in my car to get tired of the same songs playing on the top 40 stations. Audiobooks are passive consumption, but still considered reading. Pro tip: audiobooks count toward your reading log in The Library’s Summer Reading Challenge. If you haven’t signed up yet, there is still time to qualify for prizes for yourself and your kids at ebonnerlibrary.beanstack.org.

Knowing that listening to an audiobook constitutes reading is one thing. Knowing which audiobooks to listen to is another. When I have reader’s block, I look to recommended reading lists. According to Good Housekeeping online magazine, the following are the top 10 best audiobook reads of summer 2019:

- The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling (okay, that’s not just one book, but you get the point)

- “Lincoln in the Bardo” by George Saunders

- “Lock In” by John Scalzi

- “Stone Mattress” by Margaret Atwood

- “Bird Box” by Josh Malerman

- “Becoming” by Michelle Obama

- “A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R. Martin

- “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee (which is on every reading list)

- “The Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman

- “Bad Blood” by John Carreyrou

You can download audiobooks from the Digital Library at ebonnerlibrary.org from Hoopla, RB Digital, Overdrive, and Freegal. My phone is always loaded with a good audiobook for the drive to work. It’s so easy and the selection is incredible. There are never late fees because digital audiobooks check themselves back in. I think audiobooks are the best thing to come along since pop music. Free and easy audiobooks from the Digital Library are even better.
