SMR fiber internet construction starts

SANDPOINT — Intermax Networks crews are in full construction on the new high-speed broadband fiber optic network in Sandpoint up to Schweitzer Mountain Resort.

“Work began back in 2018 with development of engineering and design plans, site surveys, permitting and agreements,” said Patrick Whalen, Intermax Vice-President and CTO. “With all permits and approvals completed from multiple different agencies, we have up to four crews working different parts of the route in tandem with road improvements and a new hotel being constructed on the mountain,” Whalen continued.

The project will expand Intermax’s already extensive Sandpoint area fiber system. Currently, Intermax utilizes both fiber and microwave connections to service its clientele in that area. The scope of the project begins on Schweitzer Mountain Road adjacent to the city’s Sand Creek water treatment plant. Crews will utilize previously disturbed soils, such as logging roads, access roads and utility corridors, to run the fiber up to the lodge at Schweitzer. Some of the fiber will go underground and some will be aerial.

Intermax won the contract to expand to Schweitzer Mountain to help the resort greatly improve their high-speed internet in the village, as well as to provide enhanced services to its existing customers on their utility network.

Keeping local areas connected and providing high-level service that delivers new opportunities for customers remains a top priority for Intermax. Upgrading and extending the network of fiber optic technology is crucial to maintaining this commitment.

Intermax has provided internet service in Bonner County since 2001 and was also the first company to partner with the city of Sandpoint in the economic development fiber project in 2017.
