June 20, 1969 — SGT. WOOD TO HAWAII

Sgt. Delmar W. Wood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl C. Wood, Sandpoint, has received a consecutive overseas assignment to the 6486th Air Base Wing, Hickam AFB, Hawaii. He is now assigned to Phan Rang Air Base, Vietnam, but will leave there in early October for his new base in Hawaii.

A 1965 SHS graduate, Wood enlisted in the Air Force in November of the same year.

DELAY NAMED GRASSMAN OF THE YEAR

Raymond J. Delay, Careywood, is the 1969 Bonner County Grassman of the year.

A hard-working dairyman with a keen sense of humor, Delay operates a 1,400 acre farm with land on either side of U.S. 95 south to the Granite hill. He operates a grade A dairy with the help of his wife, milking 36 cows.

Delay has farmed in the Careywood area for 20 years. He is devoted to his family and champions the advancement of his sons, Gene and Ray, who he proudly backed in 4-H work.

WALKER HOOKS 3½ LB. CUTTHROAT

Fishing in a local stream whose name shall never be uttered by him for print, Harlan Walker caught a native 3½ pound cutthroat trout. He was accompanied by his son, Gordon, the only other person who knows the spot. The water was shallow and fast and Walker had to go along with the fish to get it. He landed it 100 yards downstream from where the battle began.

June 20, 1919 — ON AMERICAN SOIL

The transport Peerless, bearing 1000 Idaho boys, members of the 146thfield artillery, docked at 11 a.m. Saturday at New York, where a royal welcome awaited the soldiers. This is the big event for which Bonner county has been waiting and preparing during the past months, and plans are being laid here for a monster demonstration to mark the soldiers’ actual homecoming.

COMPANY A’s CAPTAIN RETURNS

Capt. J.P. Matthiensen arrived here Thursday. He left Sandpoint in April, 1917 as commander of old Company A, remaining with the company until last June, when he was transferred to other duty. For four months he commanded a company of Americans guarding several hundred German prisoners. He says his prisoners were pretty well starved out and eager to build warehouses, etc., in return for three square meals daily.

A discouraging fact is the frosty condition prevalent. This may be owing to spots on the sun, the late war or cutting of the forests. Take your choice and replant your pots and garden truck.

Sixteen in attendance at our little bible school at Broton. The grownups as a general thing are so proficient in Bible lore that they don’t attend.
