Stephen Curtis Maxey, 70

Stephen Curtis Maxey, 70, born in Colfax, Wash., in 1948, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2019, 8 days shy of his 71st birthday.

Steve graduated from Sandpoint Senior High School in 1966. In January 1967, Steve enlisted in the Army reserves with Doug Bopp; he was then honorable discharged in January 1973. In addition, he worked for Pack River Lumber, followed by Bonner Building Supply. He eventually was a gentlemen’s gentleman for the Jim Brown family for many years which included Schweitzer and Pack River Management. He ended his working career at age 62 in Hayden Lake with M&M docks, which then turned into Tumblestone. Tumblestone built fountains and landscape rocks all over the northwest including the gigantic fountains as you arrive at the Spokane airport.

Steve always was helping the people around him. He was very handy and could fix (jerry-rig) almost anything. He enjoyed his retirement years at Ranger Cabin, where he spent his days being one with nature except for with the turkeys. He would throw water bottles or whatever was within reach at the pesky buzzards with his perfect aim that stemed back to his school years with Doug playing dodgeball where all the kids wanted to be on his team to avoid being creamed.

Steve was preceded in death by his son, Jason Douglas Maxey; and his parents, Velma Cartier and Clarence Maxey. He is survived by his daughter, Sarah (Mike) Lee; granddaughter, Molly Fromm; grandson, James Lee; sister, Barbara Porath; niece and nephews, Terry (Nannette) Porath, Daniel (Haratina) Porath, and LeAnna Porath; cousin, Jackie Meredith, with many more cousins; his ex-wife, Leslie Maxey; and his best friend (brother), Douglas Bopp.

He had a gentle spirit and will be missed by his family and friends.

Graveside services will be held at Pack River Cemetery on Friday, June 28, 2019, at 10 a.m. with Douglas Bopp officiating. Friends and family are invited to a potluck barbecue at Ranger Cabin following the service; please feel free to bring your favorite side dish.
