This refers to the recent county commission meeting on the proposal to construct an asphalt plant in Sagle. I am opposed to this plant. The commissioners approved it. I also know that a new commissioner had not taken office at the time of this meeting. Any comments I make in this letter do not apply to him.
Shortly after this meeting opened, there was no doubt that the commissioners had already agreed to approve the plant construction. This was affirmed by the way those of us opposed to the plant were treated when speaking. Several were brusquely told to stop talking and sit down. All of the speakers had valid concerns. They spoke of the many bad things this plant would bring to our living area. Things like noise, odor, congestion and air and water pollution.
There will also be a financial impact because of property devaluation. This has been proven in other places where such plants have been built in residential areas.
A major concern is water pollution. The plant building site sits over the aquifer that supplies water to hundreds of us that live in this area. Rainwater containing the many toxins that go into the production of asphalt will seep into the aquifer and end up in the water we use in our homes.
We residents that oppose the plant have submitted an extremely valid appeal to the commission to reverse their approval and deny the construction of this plant.
